Thats the bit devfs solves. Its the enumeration problem. You need to answer
questions like 'what modems have I got right now' 'where is my sound' and
'is there a mouse'. For USB thats very important.
It also nicely handles the core of the 'where is UUID xyz' question for disks
(I say the core because if you hack mount to do broadcast rpc queries for
UUID's in user space as well you can mount CD's you accidentally left in
another box)
