You may be able to get this to work using a USB<-->IEEE1284 adapter cable.  
The list at:

shows four working USB<-->IEEE1284 parallel adapters.

I have a D-Link DSB-P36 adapter that I've used with an HP832 deskjet printer, 
using kernel 2.4.7 on x86 architecture:
