You can use SDCC to develop firmware (though it's not the
best 8051 compiler, as I could tell even from limited use)
and, to download it to the device, "fxload" from the Linux
hotplug project.

I have partial FX2 header glue for the FX2 that I can send
along, but you'll have to come up with your own solutions
for debugging in the device (serial line, FX2 leds, etc).
Oh, and use a recent Linux kernel (2.5.8, or 2.4.19-pre)
if you want to use the high speed support, otherwise
you'll be stuck with full speed transfers ... which is likely
not what you want if your'e using an FX2!
