I would prefer to have it go into the USB subdirectory. But in reality, there already are quite a few USB drivers that live outside of the USB tree. And since you are going to be maintaining the driver (you are, right?) you can place it wherever you feel most comfortable with it. If putting it in the sound directory is easier for you, then by all means to that.
