This would seem to be the easiest way. 

If the printer port is really a USB port, then you'd need the hub anyway.

If the printer port is really a parallel port, then you probably can't tell if 
it has been plugged in, and you'd need to present the printer interface in 
any case. Also, in this case, the printer doesn't have a vendor and product 
ID.
