Summary: not a problem with the modem. As you may recall, with my USB modem plugged in, plugging in another device (eg: webcam) caused the modem to stop responding to URBs (they come back with -EILSEQ = -84). Well, if I plug in my Phillips webcam, then plug in the modem, the webcam has the same problem:
kernel: pwc pwc_isoc_handler() called with status -84 [CRC/Timeout]. kernel: pwc Frame buffer underflow (11258 bytes); discarded. kernel: pwc Frame buffer underflow (23692 bytes); discarded. The difference is that the webcam seems to recover after this. Why doesn't the modem recover? I don't know.
