The babble is a separate problem.   This e-mail thread is in response to
Greg's finding that he could not read a partition table on a disk.  This
only happens with your patch applied.

The babble happens with a tape drive on read.  I haven't had a chance to
test it with your patch, only without.   I'm suspecting that st.ko is doing
something bad in that case.
