Given the dubious Vendor Id, the apparently total lack of anyone else complaining about this problem on the net and your opinion that it's a firmware problem I will try and get in touch with Belkin directly and see if they'll replace the unit. It's a pity my Mac-owning friends have all gone home for Easter. According to the manual this device is compatible with the USB storage drivers contained in Mac OS X so I'd have legitimate complaint if I could check that it failed to work there which hopefully it does if it fails to work here. I'll let you know how I get on.
