Is there a benefit in not using Linus' tree?
It's not mine :) Seriously, it's much easier for me to work with my tree, which started way before Linus, and doesn't contain all of the individual changes. It also lets me keep patches in my tree for a long time without having to send them to Linus (like the dmfs changes and amdpcihp driver that have been in my tree for a while.)
