This is very strange indeed.  During the initial device detection 
everything goes well.  But then later when you try to mount, your camera 
returns an error code indicating "Medium not present" -- that's what 
ASC = 0x3a means.

Why should the camera say the medium is present at first but not later?  
Could it somehow be misinterpreting one of the commands sent to it, like 
the ALLOW MEDIUM REMOVAL command?  And if it used to work under 2.4, 
what's different about 2.6 to make it stop working?

Can you send us a comparable log from a 2.4 kernel, showing the camera 
working correctly?  Comparison of the two logs may indicate where the 
problem lies.
