It can't be _just_ the lack of a MODE SENSE, because the 2.6 log shows the 
device properly handling the TEST UNIT READY and READ(10) commands sd_mod 
issues to get the partition table.  Maybe the firmware reacts badly to 
some weird combination involving TEST UNIT READY following ALLOW MEDIUM 
REMOVAL... ??
