Search on google for "ppp howto". There is a very good how to written
for ppp. You might want to just start with the simple case of using a
null modem cable and then work up from there.

There were some earlier problems with USB serial drivers (well at least
the ones I was using). A recent 2.4.x kernel has ppp over usb serial
working very well for me.
