Try changing max_sectors in linux/drivers/usb/storage/scsiglue.c to a
smaller number (i.e. 16 or 32 or 64) and see if that improves the transfer speed.

Cool, 32 or 64, about 5x faster than when i went to 128.

Given results like this, I wonder if we shouldn't reduce max_sectors permanently...

Urgh.

You're just kidding, yes?

Shattering a read/ write stream into tiny pieces, such as the 0.000065536 GB aka about zero now popular, inherently multiplies command/ status overhead by ever larger numbers. The effect grows more pronounced over time, as files and tracks grow larger. The results of experiments designed to observe this effect vary less predictably, because the growth and shrinkage in buffers and in cpu overhead doesn't sync exactly with the growth of files and tracks. In particular, as old protocols move into silicon out of gp cpu's, command/ status overhead temporarily shrinks to near zero.

If you're not just kidding, then will you join me in crafting a series of relevant experiments? Then we can speak more directly from published observations.
