I worked with it before and failed to utilize the hiddev interface ( kernel 2.4). Not sure if the situation has changed in 2.6 kernel.

libusb + usbdevfs will do the job.
I have a working version of of patched gpsd that can support DeLorme Earthmate USB GPS. You can download the source code at:
