So it might be a problem with usb-storage or with SCSI... Another thing you can try: allow usb-storage and scsi_mod to load, but don't load sd_mod. The camera will show up as a generic SCSI device but not as a disk, so you won't be able to use it. There will be a minimal amount of communication with the camera.
