So it might be a problem with usb-storage or with SCSI...

Another thing you can try: allow usb-storage and scsi_mod to load, but 
don't load sd_mod.  The camera will show up as a generic SCSI device but 
not as a disk, so you won't be able to use it.  There will be a minimal 
amount of communication with the camera.  It'll be interesting to see if 
that triggers your problem.

Are you saying that the problem occurs with 2.6.0 and 2.6.5 but not 2.6.4?
