I have a Toshiba PDR M70 camera that does not work with the Linux usb-storage driver. The breakage seems to occur when the driver tries to set up the scsi device. The module then goes into a state where it cannot be unloaded. I have tried it with 2.6.4 and 2.6.5. Any suggestions? I am not adverse to testing kernel patches.

That's suspicious. There was a patch sent in recently to handle this sort of thing. It might or might not make any difference with your camera, but it's worth a try:
