Problem solved. As I sat here and pondered what the problem was I
remebered when I read the FAQ many moons ago it mentioned something
about max luns. So, I re-read it and found it. Adding
options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=15
to /etc/modules.conf fixed the problem.
Of course, I guess I could make max_scsi_luns=4.

I borrowed an SD card and sure enough, I can mount it:
#mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/mc
no problem. But, I have XD camera cards, not SD. Put an XD card in and get:
# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/mc
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
I tried sda1 thru sda9, same result.
I plug in a Digital Concepts XD reader/writer and it mounts as /dev/sdb1
no problem.
So, it seems the usb system only recognizes it's SD reader section.
Anyone else had any luck with one of these 9-in-1 readers
From the information you provided it's not possible to tell what the
problem really is. It may be, as you said, that only the SD reader is
recognized. But it's also possible that with your XD card you need to
mount /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1.
