This makes it sound like your hub isn't working perfectly...

To get more information, turn on the usb-storage verbose debugging option 
in your kernel configuration.  Then when you plug in the key, lots of 
additional information will get written to your system log.  Post copies 
of the log, showing what happens when everything works right and when it 
doesn't work.
