This is what happening when switching on my 2nd USB disk, while copying files from my 1st USB disk.
Are those both GeneSys based disks?
There are some messages from the ehci-hcd module inside, too. So I'm still not sure, isI can't tell exactly, but it's not a problem with usb-storage. My best guess is, like you said, that the problem lies in the ALi controller.
problem with this ALi M5273 with the ehci-hcd module, or just with usb-storage?
Maybe David Brownell can offer more advice.
Well, the first post from Jurgen said he had GeneSys IDE, and I generally tune out when I hear that. As you know, we've had no end of problems from those.
If this is an issue with the ALI controller, it's the first I'll have heard. Most folk have said "works fine".
That said, it's a bit odd that switching on disk #2 affects disk #1 at all. It'd be interesting to know if that happens with non-GenSys disks, or when the disks go into different powered hubs, or with the same disks on non-ALi controllers.

Hallo!
Thank you for your reply.
My two USB HDDs:
One is a 3,5" IceCube enclosure from Macpower, it uses a USB 2.0 - IDE bridge
from Workbit (I think it is the Ninja D9065GC-001 from Workbit).
My 2nd enclosure is a Map-H31 from Mapower, and this one uses (this bad) Genesys GL811E USB 2.0-IDE bridge.
I did some more testings:
I replaced the ALi based USB 2.0 card with a NEC based card, and everything worked
fine. I also disconnected the disk with this Genesys thing and used other USB 2.0
devices.
For example:
I copied files from USB HDD (the one with Workbit chip), and while this, I connected
a simple USB 2.0 hub. And now the hub screw up the USB disk.
There was no device attached to the hub!!! The hub was single!
I also tried with an USB 2.0 stick (ADTEC AD-UDS 256M/U2), an USB 2.0 card
reader/writer (brand is "equip") and a USB 2.0 MO disk drive (Fujitsu DynaMO 1300U2 Hyper).
Always the same :-(
It seems operation of two devices at the same time is not possible.
Even plugging in a device is enough to screw up the whole thing.
Now I thought, maybe something with the mainboard? (besides the NEC based card works)
So I tried my four ALi M5273 based cards in three different computers:
Pentuim III 550MHz ASUS P3B-F mainboard
Celeron 1300MHz VIA C3M266 mainboard
Pentium III 800MHz ASUS TUV4X mainboard
Always the same, NEC based card works fine, the Ali card will not.
David Brownell, if you like, I will send you one of my ALi based cards. So you can try by
your self. I will pay for shipment and you can keep it if you like.
Best regards
Jrgen Heinrich
