Here's something you can do to try and find the problem under 2.6.  Turn
on the usb-storage verbose debugging option in the kernel configuration.  
Post the system debugging log (dmesg) you get when you plug in the card
reader; the information may help pinpoint what's going wrong.

If you're lucky, it may turn out that the same problem is responsible for 
the device not working under 2.4.  In that case you will have killed two 
birds with one stone!
