I tried both with 2.6.8.1 with the following results:

  - the ep0in timeout messages still appear
  - stopping and starting hotplug does not seem to crash khubd
    anymore
  - starting hotplug and most every USB operation takes at least 15
seconds to complete. processes trying it as well as khubd enter
the 'D' state during this time:

      cirrus:/proc/bus/usb> time cat /proc/bus/usb/devices&
      cirrus:/proc/bus/usb> ps aux | grep '\(khubd\|cat\)' | grep -v grep
      root 6434 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? DN 14:50 0:00 [khubd]
      madduck 19160 0.0 0.0 2916 424 pts/7 DN 15:04 0:00 cat
/proc/bus/usb/devices
      [...]
      cat /proc/bus/usb/devices 0.00s user 0.00s system 0% cpu 15.888 total

  - my USB system seems to be broken. Specifically, I cannot sync
with my Palm anymore. Curiously, my girlfriends USB media reader
    *does* work, however.

I will try each patch in turn to determine the problem child.
