Okay, I think I can definitely say that the kernel oops only happens
when I stop hotplug. Doing so causes the following to be output by
the init script (which may or may not be Debian-specific, I do not
know):

cirrus:~> sudo invoke-rc.d hotplug stop
+ exit 0
Stopping hotplug subsystem:
   input   
   input    [success]
   isapnp  
   isapnp   [success]
   net     
   net      [success]
   pci     
   pci      [success]
   usb    

After the next reboot, I shall try to strace the thing if that's any
help.
