Hmm.. I'd say that the comparision with a video device is a bit strained,
as the device produces at most one image every several seconds. It's more
like a scanner, however, an userspace solution (like SANE) would propably
work very unreliable, as the device is very picky about packet timings 
(we found that out using libusb, which is why we started with the kernel
driver in the first place).

The sensor produces a new fingerprint scan every time he is asked to do
so, however, as I wrote above, it needs some seconds for each one.
