I follow the usb-development and usb-users lists.  There are some reports 
from people having problems, but none (aside from yours) that indicate 
things have been getting worse since 2.6.9, as far as I can remember.

And the total number of reports is very small compared to the total number 
of Linux users.  That indicates a high percentage of users do not 
experience these problems.

Of course, it is always possible that there's something wrong with the 
driver that affects the way it operates on some systems (or with some 
hardware) but not others.  Unfortunately I can't help you debug these 
problems because I don't know enough about how the driver works.
