Attachments are appropriate and accepted, but your system information 
probably won't be much help.  We need information about the device, not 
about the computer.

The best way to find out what's going on is to build a kernel with 
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG and CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG turned on.  Then look at the 
dmesg log showing what happens when you plug in the device.  
Alternatively, you could use usbmon (instructions in 
Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt).

It would be interesting to know what Windows does to gain access to the 
device.  You could try using the USB Snoop program (available on 
sourceforge) to find out.
