Here's what you can do. Under both 2.6.15 and 2.6.18 follow this
procedure and post both sets of results. To do this you will need to
build both kernels with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG, CONFIG_USB_MON, and
CONFIG_DEBUG_FS.
Boot up with the scanner turned off. After everything settles down, run
"dmesg -c >/dev/null".
Following the instructions in Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt, start a "cat"
process to capture the usbmon output for the bus your scanner is on (it
was bus 1 in the earlier log). Then turn on the scanner.
You don't have to try running xsane, sane-find-scanner, or scanimage.
Just save the usbmon output and the dmesg log, showing what happened when
the scanner was turned on.

Hello Again Alan and Oliver
Files attached per above. Verified three CONFIG's were marked y in .config. Used 2.6.15.7 and 2.6.18.2 vanilla, started from scratch except for downloading. Verified the scanner was still working in 15.7 but not in 18.2. Also did a modprobe usbmon to make sure it was loaded althought it should have been in the kernels. Used cat /sys/kernel/debug/usbmon/1t > x_mon.out for each. The HAL daemon failed on 2.6.18 boot up as before. Hopefully waited long enough to capture relevant data before killing cat process.
Everything seemed to go okay but files are a little shorter than expected. Let me know if I need to run anything again.
Regards,
Gary
