  I didn't  notice anything  in dmesg's output,  but I'll  double check.
"ifconfig eth1  hw ether"  doesn't complain either  and later  shows the
new, changed MAC  address. This behaviour is confusing  because the user
can't tell that something went wrong... 

  Tomorrow I'll  be able to  confirm you more  precisely if, upon  a MAC
address change, both dmesg and ifconfig  stay silent and don't report an
error.

  The  set_mac_address stuff  is  not  that important  at  least for  me
(seldom  useful when  dealing with  firewalls/switches that  do layer  2
filtering), more  important it's to point  out, and that was  one of the
purposes of  my post,  that the asix  module works fine  on PPC  (with a
couple of patches).
