I had the same problem on one of my machines, but it worked fine on the
other one.  I have no idea what the problem is, but I downloaded the patched
pppd-2.4.0b2 tar.gz file, extracted the files and copied them over the ones
that are installed by the deb file.  That allowed me to use pppd as normal,
with no errors.

I got the files from a link on the www.linuxdude.co.uk howto, but I notice
that its changed already, and there is now a patched 2.4.0 (non-beta) deb as
well as tar.gz file on the Sourceforge page.  Those might also work.
