I need a ~10M long USB connection, for which purpose
I have been given an active extension cable, which
should do the trick. A Philips 'Toucam' is on the end
of it.
Trouble is, it doesn't seem to work properly. If I
boot up, load the relevant USB modules, the camera
is not seen. If I then unplug the extension cable
and plug it back in again, the camera is then detected
and works normally.
Same behavior with usb-uhci and usb-ohci, kernels 2.4.3
and 2.4.4, Intel, VIA and SIS chipsets.
Needless to say, all works well with the camera plugged
in directly (*).
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Tony.
(*) As an aside, everything seems to work OK with the
camera plugged in via just a long, passive, extension
cable. The USB specs seem really negative about pushing
your luck with overly long (>5m) cable lengths, but
I'd welcome comments on how important the 5m limit
really is ...
