You need to 'make menuconfig' (or 'make xconfig') in the highest level (in
/usr/src/linux).
You should check the linux kernel howto
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html) - this is specifically
advised in the web page you referenced.
