I am having difficulty with my 20GB LaCie usb harddrive with kernel 2.4.2 on a Redhat 7.1 system. This drive holds my mp3 collection on a fat32 partition. It works fine under windoze. It works with Linux for a short time: I can mount the filesystem, traverse it, and play a few mp3s. But after playing 5 or so mp3s, my kernel will panic and my lacie's drive light will stay solid green. I get different behaviour with kernel 2.4.3. The kernel will not panic, but the userspace process (like xmms or mpg123) will freeze permanently. Here is my debugging info: Linux version 2.4.2-2 (root@hemispheres) (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-81)) #7 Sat May 26 14:15:51 CDT 2001 Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000024 printing eip: c0210a59 pgd entry c74a3000: 0000000000000000 pmd entry c74a3000: 0000000000000000 ... pmd not present!
