well, this has turned out to be not so successful:

hardware: ISD model 205 usb-ide bridge cable (from InteractiveMediaCorp)
          OHCI hub
          [attached to 20GB disk with ext2 filesystem - known to be good]
software: 2.4.5 kernel + cvs usb-storage

reads fine. Write relatively small amounts fine. On larger writes (few
hundred MB?), freezes the system with no messages. The drive access
light remains on at this point. Hard reboot seems necessary. 

Has anyone seen similar behavior?
