If you use the latest 2.4.5-ac kernel, or the 2.4.6-pre kernel, your
m505 will be recognized. But it needs some changes to the pilot-link
package, which is not finished yet. Soon, hopefully :)
And no, due to the protocol changes from USB to serial, you can't set up
a serial link to a vmware desktop, sorry.
