Are you referencing /dev/usb/mice as you specified mouse. This I what I use
for mine with no problems. This device node allows the plugging and removing
of mice without the interface even knowing that its happened (it also allows
the multiplexing of multiple mice together)

Also if you have gpm enabled try disabling it temporarily as I have problems
in the past with this as well.
