I had similar (but not exactly the same) issues with my 1650 and SMP,
the workaround for me was to set noapic at the boot prompt to turn off
APIC interrup routing.  Now the scanner is working fine - athough my
loaded performance on my SMP box now suffers due to one processor
handling all interrupts.

Although I was told by some that this is a mobo problem with it's APIC
implementation, I haven't quite fully subscribed to that philosophy.
I've been running my box for almost two years full SMP with APIC
turned on, numerous devices, and this is the first time I've ever had
a APIC issue.  The one thing that is new is the use of the USB
modules.
