I received the suggestion in private email that it might be a known
APIC routing problem with SMP VIA chipsets.  I use a VIA chipset, but
my laptop is not SMP and APIC is not enabled in the kernel config, so
the suggested fix ("noapic" kernel boot option) didn't work.  Thanks
anyway!
