Despite the lack of lights and the errors in /var/log/messages it actually works. I typed 'ifconfig' and it had made an ethernet device and started the network scripts for me. However, it randomly freezes during large (> 50 Mb) file transfers. By playing with it, I found that if I ping the host that I was FTPing to the USB device would "wake back up" and continue working. At least now I'll be able to try a more up to date kernel to see if anything changes.
