so after formatting the cf in windows, reading and writing works.  The
problem is now is, I want to write a kernel image to the cf; I assume
the proper way
to do this is "dd if=some_bzImage of=/dev/sda1".  When I do this, my
system locks permanently; the same happens with "cat foo > /dev/sda1".
/dev/sda1 is not mounted when I do this.  any ideas?
