I have a Dell P4 with two USB devices currently
connected....a UMAX Astra 3400 scanner (not supported
by Linux as I am told) and a new PHILIPS pcvc690k
Vesta Pro Scan webcam.

I have NO idea as to these things work. I downloaded
gnomemeeting (the best that I know of). Haven't yet
talked to anyone yet but will try. No idea as where
to get more software for the camera. I want to be
able to stream videos and different formats and
different resolutions. I went to
http://www.smcc.demon.nl and saw that there are
drivers specific for Linux. Sorry but I haven't yet
received my phD in kernel compiling and have NO idea
how this particular driver works. I am using Mandrake
8.1 with kernel 2.4.8-34.1mdk. The site recommends
using a generic kernel---I refuse to do this. I think
my Mandrake kernel is the best for my system.

I can see a small size capture in gnomemeeting but I
cannot adjust the video size and other options. The
above site has a pcwx thing but don't know how to get
that to work. my /lib/modules only contains two
folders: 2.4.8-26mdk and 2.4.8-34mdk.

Also when I shutdown my system it hangs. The systems
displays two messages

usb.c: USB disconnect on device 1
usb.c: USB disconnect on devcie 2

Afterwards the system hangs indefinitely and refuses
to reboot.

Can anyone please get me started with the Webcam.? I
bought this specifically becuase I was told this works
very well with Linux---doesn't seem to be the case so
far. Could anyone please recommend conferencing
software that lets me talk to NetMeeting? What do I
have to do to use all the available features of the
webcam?
