Try stuffing around with BIOS settings. In particular, look for things called 
"plug-n-play" or things that try to predict which operating system you are 
using.

Also, I'd try upgrading to a 2.4.19-pre or later kernel. Kenrel developers 
don't normally use Redhat (and almost never use Debian :) default kernels, so 
it is difficult to provide advice for anything except a Linus kernel.
