Where to start...Essentially the device is a digital streaming audio device.
It takes extracted digital audio and sends it via an optical cable to the
minidisc recorder. It does this in realtime using isochronus transfer mode,
so the device is set to use full usb bandwidth. The minidisc actually does
the recording - you hit record and it "listens" to the usb devices' output.
Built into the device is bass, treble, and volume control (thus three tabs in
the mixer and several audio drivers). Here is the manufacturer's web page:

Also, so maybe you can understand a little more, here is the info in

>So you really just want to copy an audio track off a CD and store it as some
>other format?
I don't want to store it anywhere on my computer long-term. I want to play
the extracted audio downstream through the usb audio device.
>You don't need an audio device for that.
Maybe not for extractoin but in order to send the stream to the recorder you
do need a device. How else would you connect the minidisc to the computer?
The whole point is simply to send extracted audio to the minidisc via this
usb device for the purpose of recording to the minidisc.
>You probably don't want to play the CD and record it using your audio
>device. That would be a digital-analog-analog-digital conversion, which is
>not so good.
Thats the whole point of this device - to be all digital by using digital
extraction and streaming it through a digital device to a digital recorder.
Its just that the linux cd player doesn't use digital extraction during
playback. Thus I get no output to the device.
>What you really want to do is to convert the data from one digital format to
>another, and there are several tools available to do that (including
>cdparanoia, which you mentioned).
I realized after seeing the manufacturer's site that I need to do digital
extraction and send it do the device. Like I said, I think the device works
in linux but I need to figure out how to send the extracted audio stream
through it. I haven't had time to test it since I've found out this
information. I was just asking about ways to send the stream to the device.
I'll try some things when I get home from work (i.e. xmms, etc.) this
afternoon and I'll let you know how it goes.
