Thanks for the steer, Greg. The best I can do is 2.4.2-2. Any thoughts on what mileage I will get from this - any gotchas ?

You need to upgrade your kernel. I'd recommend the latest Red Hat update (2.4.18-3 in Red Hat 7.3) which has direct support for this device in the pl2303 driver. You will not get that device to work properly with a 2.2.16 kernel, sorry.
