I looked at the kernel configuration and saw that 'scsi cdrom support'
was - as the only scsi functionality - directly compiled into the
kernel; so there was no module sr_mod at all.
Then I recompiled the kernel with 'scsi cdrom support' as module. Now,
autoloading sr_mod works, and the message about block-major-11 in
/var/log/messages is gone. But besides that there is no change in the
behaviour. Do I need a different (patched) version of this module for
the USB mass storage support?

Maybe this is the reason. In the meantime I realized, that sometimes
'hwscan --usb' (which is started by the usb.agent script) crashes,
when the device is plugged in.
As soon as I find the time, I will try the device with the RedHat 7.2
system from a friend.

See above. This shows why the module sr_mod isn't loaded. But for me
this makes no difference corresponding to the final result.
And to Georg: waiting until the harddisk is up, and then plugging
in the USB cable makes absolutely no difference. :-(
