Ouch, very old kernel.  You need to at least upgrade to their latest
release, if for the ext3 bug fix, and the security fixes.

How about trying 2.4.20-pre5?  It might be a bit better off.
Or can you try a new 2.5 kernel?  ehci is much more stable there.
