The pentax 430rs is reported to work. I asked also to the person (Klaus
R�decke) that used it with an old Suse kernel (SuSE 7.3 kernel
2.4.10-4GB). 

For me it worked just fine (whitout any driver from Pentax) on a WinXP
machine, so I think the problem (a proprietary protocol) you're talking
is referred to the 430 (non 430RS). 

In any case I cannot get the camera working with any newer kernel (using
Debian I tried form 2.4.17 up to the 2.4.20-pre8, and 2.4.20-pre8-ac2). 

I got similar error, and also some kernel freeze when trying to mount
the device. I hope to have the time to retry (I just put a serial
console to get more info when kernel freeze) in the next days, and give
more info.
