I try to get a USB HDD external enclosure to work
I have a "FreeCom Drive In Kit", with a harddisk in
I also have tried a "Crystal Case DEM-1331(T0)"
both are USB2.0
usb2 card with NEC chipset (printer works on that card)
devfs mounted on /dev

a view days ago when i first installed it looked all fine:
(from /var/log/messages)

the freecom one:

kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:08.2-4, assigned address 2
/etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usb-storage for USB product 7ab/fc03/1110
kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

the crystal one:

kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:07.2-1, assigned address 3
/etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usb-storage for USB product 5ab/60/306
kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

and then it stops - the device does not get created, lsmod says that
usb-storage is still initializing, and it stays that way eternally.

the modprobe trying to load usb-storage seems to be unkillable
(Status "D" in ps aux)

hardware is fine, i in some other os it works

hotplug 2002_08_26
kernels tried:
2.4.20-pre8-ac3
2.4.20-pre10-ac2
2.4.20-pre11
2.4.20-rc1
and some 2.5.x (.39, .40, .44 iirc)

Any ideas?
What can i do?

Wolfgang
