Hi,
I have a pretty much identical problem to that reported at
http://www.geocrawler.com/mail/thread.php3?subject=%5BLinux-usb-users%5D+USB+ATA+harddisk&list=4563

This problem never seemed to be solved
I am using SuSE 8.1 and I have another USB HD attached.
I don't have sd_mod unfortunately, is this a pre-8.1 module?

^^the last one is the problem item!!
/proc/scsi/usb-storage-1/2:

   Host scsi2: usb-storage
       Vendor: EagleTec
      Product: USB Storage Device
Serial Number: None
     Protocol: Transparent SCSI
    Transport: Bulk
         GUID: 05e307020000000000000000
     Attached: Yes

There are 3 entries in the config program under root (little icon on the KDE
taskbar), all the same apart from the details below:

USB GUID: 05e307020000000000000000
Device File: /dev/sdb
Size: 78140161 sectors a 512 bytes
Geometry (Logical): CHS 38154/64/32

configured new/new/no
available no/Yes/no
needed no/No/no

If I try to mount sdb using a desktop icon, I get the following errror:
/home/george/Desktop/USB Drive 2
is of type FSDevice but has no Dev=... entry.

and

george@linux:~> mount /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: Input/output error
mount: mount point /media/sda2 does not exist

and
linux:/home/george # fdisk /dev/sdb

Unable to read /dev/sdb

If I do what was suggested... i.e. run dmesg -c until no output, remove then
re-install, I get the same errors as the user on the post above.
His issues seemed unresolved...or is the archive incomplete.
I would appreciate any advice on this :)

thanks
George
