Sorry about the delay in getting back to you but I have been away.

The following is what I get with /proc/bus/usb/devices after plugging the
usb cable for the phone.

ls -al /proc/bus/usb/devices
/bin/ls: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory
ls -al /proc/bus/usb/
total 0
dr-xr-xr-x    2 root     root            0 Nov 20 06:44 ./
dr-xr-xr-x    5 root     root            0 Nov 20 06:44 ../

However I do get

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1, assigned device number 2

in /var/log messages and there is a whole list of messages in
/var/log/syslog which I can send if this will help.
