No, I never did.  I'm now using 2.4.18 from RH8.0, and it still exhibits
the same problem.  I've heard from other people with the same problem as
well.  I don't remember ever getting any responses on how to debug this
either.

Did you try mounting /dev/sda2?  I don't have any memory sticks, but I
seem to recall that this may work.
