Just to let people know, when I recompiled my kernel in module mode instead of monolithic, and I load the modules for usb well after booting, the serial interface to usb works fine. I'm having problems with the PIC reading the data correctly, but I hope to get that fixed reasonably soon. The linux serial side looks like it works, so all my legacy code can stay, I just have to change the device name!
